Lost in a Dream is a wonderful shoot, created by Natalie Armin & Keith Clouston. Two talented creatives at the top of their respective games, so it was never going to be in doubt about how good Lost in a Dream was going to turn out. We love how they used very simple materials to create something that feels very epic, everyone who worked on this shoot, we’re obviously very passionate about what they we’re creating & it shows. We can’t wait to see what else they’ll come up with. Natalie & Keith we’re happy enough to tell us more about the shoot & inspiration:
Natalie Armin – Stylist: “For the styling & set design my inspiration came from the Giles Deacon S/S 2012 show featuring stunning laser-cut and shredded-metallic leather dresses amongst a stunning backdrop of silver: http://www.lelalondon.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Giles-SS12-5.jpg http://www.wallpaper.com/galleryimages/17052634/gallery/62_giles_tl200911.jpg …which led me to the idea of using foil for the backdrop that me & Keith put together (…We used about 4 rolls!) i loved the idea of having it slightly crumpled to reflect the light making shapes & shadows to give the set the theater we envisioned, using the remaining foil to trail on the floor. Both Keith & I share a love of Italian Photographer Paolo Roversi’s work for his hauntingly beautiful & moody images, we wanted to inject the same dreamy ‘film’ feel playing with light shooting through various materials.
For the garments themselves i pulled from three designer’s who’s use of metallic’s, strong shape & structured knitwear gelled the story together, with undertones of black & a few accessories. The piece’s that stood out for me was the drop crystal skirt by John Earnshaw & knitted dresses by designer Hannah Withington both collections embraced shape & an hour glass silhouette. One of my favourite shots featured a mask & leather crown made by artist Lora Avedian….Keith is a pleasure to work with & i looking forward to collaborating on more editorials with him in future – watch this space!”
Keith Clouston – Photographer: “For me, the shoot was a departure from my usual ‘comfort zone’. I tend to shoot very crisp, clean, controlled setups. I wanted to try something with much harder lighting and give the images more depth than the plain white backdrops I use so often.
For inspiration, I drew from the works of Paolo Roversi. His work is breathtaking and something I’ve always aspired to, but never had the nerve to attempt. His use of film, large format as well as tilt and shift optics for his imagery have always been something I’ve wanted to explore. While the story is shot in digital and has had to emulate in photoshop a lot of the effects he employees in camera, it certainly is a step in his direction (for me, at least!). I hope to eventually shoot a full project true to his style one day.
In terms of lighting / processing… The story was shot with 2 flash heads with grids on them. The backdrop was rolls of crumpled kitchen foil which Nat and I taped together on the day. For many of the shots, I shot through a scratched glass panel to create some of the blurs / light flares in shot. The motion blur and colour stains were later applied in photoshop. Looking at the results, it’s hard to believe it was all shot in my living room!”
